Thermo Q Exactive Plus Quadrupole-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer
The Thermo Scientific™ Q Exactive™ Plus is a high-resolution, accurate-mass (HRAM) hybrid mass spectrometer that combines a quadrupole mass filter with an Orbitrap mass analyzer, enabling precise precursor selection and ultra-high-resolution detection. It is equipped with a Heated Electrospray Ionization (HESI) source, allowing efficient ionization of polar and semi-polar analytes under soft ionization conditions, ideal for small molecule studies.
In our lab, the Q Exactive Plus is hyphenated with the Thermo Vanquish Horizon Binary Chromatography System, a state-of-the-art UHPLC platform that provides excellent retention time precision, robust solvent delivery, and fast, high-resolution separations. This integrated LC-MS setup supports both high-throughput and high-sensitivity workflows. We use this system primarily for Untargeted Metabolomics to comprehensively profile a broad range of small molecules in complex biological samples without prior bias and for Isotope Tracing Untargeted Metabolomics (ITUM) to track the metabolic fate of stable isotope-labeled substrates (e.g., 13C-glucose, 13C-fatty acids) and uncover dynamic changes in metabolic flux and pathway utilization. Together, the Q Exactive Plus and Vanquish Horizon form a powerful platform for high-confidence identification and quantification of metabolites, enabling advanced systems biology and metabolic research.

Thermo Scientific™ TSQ Quantis™ Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer with Advion NanoMate® Robotic Infusion System
The TSQ Quantis™ Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer is a high-sensitivity, high-throughput instrument optimized for quantitative workflows. When hyphenated with the Advion TriVersa NanoMate®, an automated chip-based nanoelectrospray infusion system, it becomes a powerful platform for shotgun lipidomics, allowing direct infusion and rapid quantification of lipid species from complex biological samples. In our lab, this system enables precise, targeted quantification of numerous lipid classes in lipid-rich tissues such as brain, liver, and adipose. The direct infusion strategy eliminates chromatographic separation, streamlining sample processing while maintaining robustness and reproducibility.
Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ GC 240 Mass Spectrometer
The Thermo Orbitrap Exploris GC 240 is a state-of-the-art gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system that combines high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) capabilities with the speed and sensitivity of Orbitrap™ technology. It is designed for advanced analysis of volatile and semi-volatile compounds, offering unmatched mass accuracy and resolving power for compound identification and quantification in complex mixtures.
In our lab, the Orbitrap Exploris GC 240 is hyphenated with a Thermo Trace 1310 Gas Chromatograph, enabling precise, robust separations prior to high-resolution mass detection. This powerful GC-HRAM platform provides sub-ppm mass accuracy, resolving power up to 240,000 (FWHM), and rapid scanning speeds, making it ideal for high-confidence isotopologue analysis. We primarily use this system for Metabolic Flux Analysis (MFA), where it enables us to quantify isotopologue distributions from 13C-labeled substrates (e.g., glucose, fatty acids, ketones) with high precision and model metabolic pathway activity and carbon flux in both in vitro and in vivo systems. The Orbitrap Exploris GC 240 provides critical resolution and dynamic range needed to detect subtle labeling patterns, supporting detailed reconstruction of metabolic networks and enabling a deeper understanding of cellular metabolism under various biological conditions.
