Ways to engage in online and in-person audiences
Do you need additional tools? Consider first what you can do right in your platform:
Polling: icebreakers, choose the content, give input, quizzing, trivia, knowledge check
Chat: endless ways to use chat
Annotate: collaborative whiteboard for all participants, use PPT slides as a backdrop for annotations
Breakouts: think-pair-share, problem solve, group work, discussions
Sharing: video, music, slides, images, participant share
Other: read, speak, listen, think deeply, write, laugh
Be intentional about interaction
When do you need interaction or an activity?
Plan your activity or interaction
Choose the tool last. Which tool will best meet your objective?
For in-person, need interaction every 10 minutes. For online, every 5 minutes!
Can be short question, or more interactive.
Choose one or two tools to use throughout your workshop, don't use them all!
Soft openers (5-10 min before webinar): warm up the brain
Openers: lay the groundwork for participation; pull them into the session
Learning activities: teach through activities, not just lecture
Energizers: (60 min) or after large section of content; get people on their feet
Revisiters: review content; have learners summarize
Closers: (last 5 min) participants walk away knowing what their next action step is
