Description
The DDF gives the University's most accomplished Ph.D. candidates an opportunity to devote full-time effort to an outstanding research project by providing time to finalize and write a dissertation during the fellowship year.
Award
Stipend of $25,000 for the academic year (September-May), tuition for up to 14 thesis credits each semester (fall & spring), and subsidized health insurance through the Graduate Assistant Health Plan
Eligibility
Programs may nominate Ph.D. candidates if the nominee will have passed the written and oral preliminary examinations by February 25, 2022; will have completed all program coursework by the end of spring semester 2022 (nominee may be registered for program coursework in spring 2022, but may not have any incompletes in program coursework at the time of nomination); is expected to graduate in 2023.

The DOVE Fellowship Program seeks to assist graduate programs to promote a diversity of views, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence. This diversity is promoted through the recruitment and support of academically excellent students with diverse ethnic, racial, economic, and educational backgrounds and experiences.

Eligibility
U.S. citizens or permanent residents entering a graduate program at the University of Minnesota for the first time in the 2022-2023 academic year (entering Fall term). Students pursuing either the master's or doctoral degree in research-based programs may be nominated. Students with terminal degrees are not eligible (such as M.D., J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.). Nominee can hold a master's degree from another institution.

In 2023, the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Master's Thesis Awards in the broad categories of Social Sciences and Mathematical, Physical Sciences, and Engineering.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers fellowships and grants to individuals to pursue research, study, or creative arts projects in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year.

Description
Through collaborations with teaching partners in the Midwest, COSP Doctoral Scholars can apply for pre-doctoral faculty positions while writing their dissertations (i.e., at the ABD stage). Fellows are expected to live in the town of the fellowship institution (move there temporarily) and teach one course per semester during the academic year of their award.

Description
UMN and DAAD have an exchange relationship, whereby DAAD permits the UMN to nominate graduate students and post-doctoral researchers (those who have not yet exceeded two years past the completion of their Ph.D.) for ten months of research at a German university.
Award
Monthly stipends are approximately €1,000 for doctoral candidates and postdocs. Round-trip airfare is also covered.
Eligibility
U.S. or Canadian citizens who are registered at the Graduate School at the time of application (or are employed as post-docs.) Foreign nationals (except German citizens) may apply if they have been full-time graduate students at the UMN for at least two years. Candidates must demonstrate language proficiency commensurate with their proposed study project, generally considered to be 2 years of German courses or more.

The Schochet Endowment provides a full-year Interdisciplinary Fellowship in Queer, Trans and Sexuality Studies for PhD candidates at UMN.
Eligibility

Description
The College of Liberal Art’s Dissertation Proposal Development (DPD) program expands and improves formal dissertation prospectus and grant proposal development for humanities and social science doctoral students at the University of Minnesota. It is modeled on the Social Science Research Council's (SSRC) Dissertation Proposal Development program.
Award
Student participants receive up to $4,000 in summer research funding.
Eligibility
The program targets students at the end of their second or third year (depending on department expectations) in graduate school, around the time when they are articulating their dissertation prospectuses.
Requirements
The program includes an intensive five-day workshop in spring, followed by independent student summer research, and another intensive five-day workshop in the late summer and early fall, prior to fall research grant proposal deadlines. Student participants must register for a 3-credit graduate seminar in fall semester as part of the program.
