BMPs for small grains in southern Minnesota

Key points

For wheat growers in southern Minnesota (excluding southwestern MN), using the soil nitrate test is not an option for determining fertilizer N rates. Instead, guidelines are based on yield goal, previous crop, and soil organic matter level. These guidelines can be seen in Table 3 of Wheat fertilizer recommendations.

Research has shown that the majority of nutrients are taken up by wheat between tillering and heading. Having an adequate supply of all nutrients in the root zone early in the growing season is important.

In south central, southeastern and central Minnesota, fertilizer N should be applied in the spring and incorportated before planting.

On sandy soils, split applications are encouraged.
