โThe more messaging that is out there about having this be an opportunity about lessons learned and applying those lesson in the future is what we need to doโฆThe more the president, the provost, departments and offices think about inclusion, which supports everyone..the more we unlearn and address what ableism is,โ said Sohail Akhavein, manager of student access at the Disability Resource Center.
What did the Disability Resource Center (DRC) see happen to students during the pandemic?
Many students were not ready for online classes, especially students with executive functioning-related impacts. The lack of connection and resources available made students grow in isolation. Also, students face technology-related issues, such as reliable internet.
How did the DRC respond to the impacts of the pandemic on student mental health?
The Disability Resources center made a lot of student referrals to other resources, such as Student Counseling Services. The center consulted with faculty, staff, and other resources about the best ways to support students. Now, the DRC is having ongoing conversations about how to support people through hybrid and inclusive modules in teaching and services after the pandemic.
