The inception of our student chapter was driven by the distinct need for a supportive community among Math Alliance Scholars and F-GAP students at the University of Minnesota (UMN), an institution distinguished by its substantial number of Math Alliance Scholars, a testament to the efforts of Dr. Dick McGehee. A venerated champion for the inclusion of historically marginalized groups in mathematics, Dr. McGehee played a pivotal role in enriching the diversity of the Math Department's student body—enhancing gender diversity and increasing the representation of ethnic minorities, all of whom have been thriving in the math Ph.D. program. His tenure as Director of Graduate Studies laid the groundwork for a dynamic and inclusive community, ultimately inspiring the formation of the very first officially recognized Math Alliance Student Chapter through the collective efforts of this community.
Initially led by doctoral students Maria Isabel Sanchez and subsequently by Daniela Beckelhymer, under the guidance of our advisor, Dr. McGehee, we have successfully created a safe and nurturing space. Now, with an official graduate coordinator position, currently held by Carlos Osco Huaricapcha, and recognized status as an official student group at the university, our chapter continues to flourish. Here, members can not only excel academically but also find personal growth and fulfillment. Our mission is to ensure that every member feels valued, supported, and connected throughout their mathematical journey.
