Scholar is strongly recommended to use time between award and start date to prepare and submit all needed IRB and IACUC protocols
Spend a minimum of 50% effort on training, research, and career development activities related to the K Accelerator Program.
Scholar and mentoring team meet with KAP Director to discuss project and potential revisions to the research plan and mentoring team within the first month of starting the program. Scholar’s K submission plans will also be discussed.
Submit revised project proposal by the end of 2nd month. Proposal to include description of how the proposed KAP project will support a K submission and include a brief draft description of the K study aims and training goals.
Scholar and mentoring team meet with the KAP Director to discuss feedback on the revised KAP proposal and finalize project plans.
Mentorship team to include a primary mentor (ideally with the rank of Professor, but Associate Professors will be allowed in certain cases), a career development mentor and a data scientist (methodologist or biostatistician).
With your mentoring team each year, address components of your career development plan:
1. Develop your career vision and career mission.
2. Develop a Professional Development Plan for strategic and annual goals with associated near-term objectives, specific objectives, and competencies for the two years. Submit to CTSI-Ed within first two months of funding.
3. Identify what strategies (e.g. experiences, training, etc.) will facilitate objective achievement
Meet at regularly established times with your mentors individually and as a team. Meetings with the full mentoring team must be held, at a minimum, four times a year. Meeting with the primary mentor (substituted at times by a secondary mentor) should be approximately weekly.
Apply for NIH K-award funding within the first 15 months of support.
Submit a minimum of 2 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the first 18 months.
Complete a baseline, interim, and post mentee survey to assess your confidence in developing and maintaining a productive mentoring relationship and to evaluate your experiences with mentors.
Complete all requested program evaluation surveys in a timely manner.
Complete Hogan Leadership Forecast Series Assessments (1-hour debrief and coaching session with Michelle Lamere, MPA, ACC
Participate in annual committee progress review meetings
Submit six-month and annual reports of progress
Attend at least 75% of the required weekly K Scholar Multidisciplinary Seminar Series on Wednesday afternoons and participate in other required program activities (Translational Science Retreat, etc.)
Attend at least 75% of monthly KAP Research Group meetings led by Nancy Sherwood, PhD
Attend 30-minute monthly check-in meetings with Nancy Sherwood, PhD
Attend Biannual Translational Science Retreats
Complete Optimizing the Practice of Mentoring (online)
Submit an abstract to and attend the annual Clinical and Translational Science conference, held in the spring each year in Washington, DC. At the minimum you are expected to attend the conference in year 1 or year 2. It is strongly encouraged for you to attend both years.
Present research at the CTSI Poster Session and Reception (9/15/27 and 9/19/28)
Participate in the P3 semester long grant writing workshop in year 1 or year 2
Final program meeting with mentors, Department Chairs, Division/Program directors and CTSI-Ed leadership
