1. Ensure scholar spends a minimum of 50% effort on training, research, and career development activities related to their CTSI-Ed Program.
2. Mentors must complete the nationally recognized online mentoring training “Optimizing the Practice of Mentoring” (if they have not done so previously) available at https://z.umn.edu/ctsimentortrain within one month of program start date.
3. Mentors must complete the Mentoring Excellence Training Academy within the first 6-12 months of program start date.
4. Attend CTSI-Ed faculty mentor and scholar orientations, trainings, and meetings (should be no more than 4 meetings a year).
5. Serve as a judge at the CTSI Poster Session, held annually in the fall
6. Assist your scholar to:
Develop his/her career goals, associated near-term objectives, and specific objectives for each of the three years.
Identify what strategies (experiences, training, etc.) will facilitate achievement.
Identify how research experiences and training will be acquired. While these should be tailored to each scholar, with regard to outcomes, it is expected that scholars will:
Submit a minimum of 2 manuscripts within first 18 mos to peer-reviewed journals;
Submit an abstract to Clinical and Translational Sciences Annual Research Conference;
Apply for NIH K-award funding within the first 15 months of the program.
Develop an annual timeline showing when clinical research experiences and/or training will occur and when objectives will be completed.
7. Approve and review on a semiannual basis the scholar’s Professional Development Plan and Scholar Report of Progress, which includes his/her career goals, near-term objectives, planned experiences, competencies, and products, with a timeline. Provide short paragraph assessment on the Scholar’s progress in the space provided on the Scholar Report of Progress.
8. Identify which objectives, experiences, and products are best facilitated by each mentor on the team. Also, identify when an additional consultant or mentor is needed; and assist the scholar in making this connection.
9. Establish regularly scheduled meeting times with the scholar. This should occur approximately weekly. The mentoring team will need to meet as a group at a minimum of four times a year.
10. Assure the scholar is receiving necessary support and resources from his/her home department.
11. Provide information requested for semi-annual review meetings about mentoring activities (e.g. when meetings with scholar occurred and activities with scholar).
12. Inform the CTSI-Ed Co-Director(s) about any concerns or difficulties with the scholar.
