We are proud to offer Hydrocamp as a true team-teaching effort. UMN hydrogeology faculty collaborate closely with scientists from the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) to deliver comprehensive instruction in hydrogeology. Our colleagues from across disciplines often contribute guest lectures, bringing fresh expertise and enriching the course content. We maintain an excellent student-to-instructor ratio, and our two full-time teaching assistants serve as a vital backbone of the program’s success (Photo credit: Lucas Wingate).
Crystal Ng
Crystal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and has been part of the Hydrocamp teaching team since 2014. She received her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT after a BA in Applied Math from Harvard University. In her research, she is interested in how shallow groundwater systems interact with the many domains around it - including surface water, climate, biogeochemical cycles, vegetation, and people. She explores these interactions using a combination of computational modeling and field methods, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.
Peter K. Kang
Peter is an Associate Professor and the Gibson Chair of Hydrogeology in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Peter has been part of the Hydrocamp teaching team since 2019, bringing his expertise in transport processes in heterogeneous media to enrich the curriculum. Peter earned a BSc in 2008 from Seoul National University with summa cum laude, followed by an MSc (2010) and PhD (2014) from MIT. The Kang Research Group investigates the physics of flow and reactive transport in porous and fractured media, with the goal of advancing the field of fractured rock hydrogeology.
William Daniels
Will is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He earned a BA in biology from Lawrence University and PhD in geosciences from Brown University. At UMD, Will teaches courses on hydrology, limnology, glacial geology, and Earth history. He has extensive field research experience from Antarctica to the Arctic, including ongoing climate and paleoclimate research projects in the Upper Mississippi River Basin near the hydrocamp field site. Will joined the instructor team in 2025.
Jordan Mayer
Jordan is a researcher at the Minnesota Geological Survey. The majority of his work is with wells and borings and the County Well Index (Minnesota's statewide database for wells and borings). He also conducts borehole geophysical logging in support of MGS projects. At camp, Jordan helps manage logistics to ensure the gear is where it needs to be, the pumps keep running, and the water keeps flowing. He also co-instructs various topics with the other instructors.
Angela Radke
Angela is a Quaternary Geologist at the Minnesota Geological Survey. Her work focuses on mapping the glacial sediments at the surface and in the subsurface throughout Minnesota. At Hydrocamp, she instructs students about the glacial geology of Minnesota, the different aquifers and aquitards at the field site, and how and when they were formed.
Scott Alexander
Scott is an emeritus instructor who continues to play a key role in the successful execution of Hydrocamp. Scott has been involved with Hydrocamp since its inception in 1995 and brings the most extensive knowledge of the field site. Scott currently serves as the chief geologist at Darcy Solutions.
