Interested in exploring the world or working in another country? Many UMN graduates pursue international travel, work, intern, volunteer, and research opportunities. Below are a few ideas to jump start your exploration. We encourage you to contact your career office if you would like help with your gap year goals or aren't finding a program that fits your needs.
As a first step, it's important to consider what a gap year means to you. Consider your goals for the time, financial considerations, and visa requirements.
Fellowships are typically paid, structured programs. Many of these programs have specific application processes and deadlines that start several months (or even a year) before you would start the program.
Working Holiday Visa programs allow you to work in a country or up to a year in order to fund your travels. Currently, US citizens can get a Working Holiday Visa for Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Ireland, and Singapore. The requirements for who can apply for a working holiday visa and where you can go vary country by country. You can only get a visa for countries that have an agreement with your home country.
These are sites that compile opportunities, job postings, programs, information, and advice on traveling and working abroad.
