It's important to consider what a gap year would mean for you along with the pros and cons of a gap year for your particular situation. Many students pursue opportunities for 9 months to a year (either inside our outside of the US) before joining a graduate program.
As an international student, there are some additional considerations to take into an account. Namely:
1) Visa eligibility. If you're looking for a program outside of the US, visas are sometimes restricted based on nationality. Keep this in mind as you review the programs listed on this site. You'll need to make sure a specific program is open to you. This also applies to US citizens.
2) OPT restrictions. If you are looking to stay in the US, Optional Practical Training allows you to work in the US after graduation for one year. In general, you must be doing something related to your major field of study, which can include:
One or more jobs
Contract employment
Self-employment
Employment through an agency or consulting firm
Unpaid internship
Volunteer work
Review OPT information at z.umn.edu/opt and consult with International Student Scholar Services (ISSS).
3) Written records. If you are staying in the US using OPT, it is important to keep written documentation of all your employment. The US government tracks any academic program or work experiences.
