2023 SPRING FIELD TRIPS
Love science but hate the idea of working at a lab bench everyday?
Join Field Guides this spring for three Friday field trip exploring unique areas of ecology-based research here on campus - and learn how YOU can get involved as a student! Each trip will begin with a tour lead by expert staff/curators, and will end with a Q&A session featuring staff and current undergraduate student researchers. Session leaders will discuss their experiences, answer your questions, and share upcoming ways to get involved. Snacks and networking time will be provided at the end of each session so bring your questions and curiosities!
Alongside networking, these events are great times to connect with fellow students in the ecology community here on campus. You are welcome to attend just one event, or all three but space is limited so please let us know you are coming via the RSVP forms below.
Open to all grad and undergrad students -- we hope you join us!
MARCH 3rd (3-5PM)
Ever wondered how research and outreach happens at a museum? Meet natural history and science communication experts as they explain and showcase behind-the-scenes action at the Bell Museum and its zoological collections. Bring your questions and curiosities about museums, and learn how YOU can get involved In museum research!
MARCH 31st (3-5PM)
Take a break from the snow and bask in the warmth of the tropics as you walk through the University's living plant collection in the CBS Conservatory. After exploring the greenhouses and learning about plant care, take a guided tour of the University Herbarium and see how plants/fungi are collected and preserved for future research, and how you can get involved!
APRIL 21st (1-5PM)
Spring is here! Visit the world-famous field station and the birthplace of ecosystem ecology! Meet with the station director and take a hike out to Cedar Lake Bog and through the confluence of quintessential Minnesota biomes as you explore some of the larger field experiments on site. All are welcome but this is an especially great opportunity to meet staff and explore the field station prior to their summer internship!
Summer Research Opportunities Seminar, Feb 10th
Interested in doing paid research this summer? Not sure where to start looking? This seminar brought together researchers from across the UMN College of Biological Sciences who are hiring undergraduate and post-grad interns this summer. In addition to hiring for regular paid positions, some of these researchers are also looking to mentor UMN undergraduates on part-time projects through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).
