While researching ethics for technical writing I was interested to learn how writers can accidentally have their writing subconsciously oppress racial minorities and other modern movements. What I ended up learning out of this though is, though this can happen with inexperienced writers, what is more common is experienced writers breaking ethics in their writings on purpose to meet company goals. The worst part of this is I can’t even blame them for this. They aren’t doing this maliciously (at least I hope), they are just doing it to keep their jobs in competitive companies like Google, Samsung, etc. Though I can harshly criticize them for what they are doing, at the end of the day it is what keeps food at the end of the table. In a sense, this is the technical writing equivalent of Yellow journalism in the news industry, as this is what gets the most eyes or when a project manager tells the builders in a construction company to start cutting corners.
In regards to the actual structure and creation of the styles, I ended up upgrading my previous processes of essay writing for this assignment. Usually, I like to outline in a post-it note each author and their main points but due to the number of sources, and more particularly the dense amount of information found in each source for this topic, I ended up having to turn my post-it note to a nine-page document and use my saved post-it notes to align each authors work in a specific and proper order to create the narrative I was looking for. This, I feel, really helped elevate my writing (however I also feel like it quadrupled my time spent on this project). Overall I was expecting this to be kind of a nicher topic and was surprised by how much information is actually out there regarding this, but also was saddened to find out there was no clear way to solve this issue of immoral ethics in the business world.
