The below tasks must be completed to be in compliance with Minnesota and University policies concerning contact with patients and patient records, and potential contact with bloodborne pathogens.

All medical students are required to have current immunizations and/or tests (blood titres, x-rays, etc.) per the Vaccination and Immunization Requirement Policy. Students cannot be in patient care settings without the required immunizations.
Learners must complete the following vaccination requirements prior to October 1st of their MS1 year and maintain compliance through the length of the program:
Measles (rubeola), mumps and rubella (two doses), or positive titre; (University requirement)
Diptheria/Tetanus (Td) dose in the last ten (10) years; (University requirement)
Chicken pox (varicella) series, documented positive history, or positive titre;
Pertussis later than 2005;
Hepatitis B series or documented immunity;
Evidence of tuberculosis test, or in the case of a positive TB test, results of a normal chest x-ray dated after the TB test, completed within six months prior to program start date
COVID-19 Vaccination
*IMPORTANT: The Hepatitis B series takes 4 to 6 months to complete; therefore, if you have not had this series, you should begin this process as soon as possible to comply with this requirement. If you need an extension to the October 1st deadline to complete your HepB series, contact the registrar at ume-req@umn.edu.
Students are also strongly encouraged to have:

The H2N1 vaccine
Submit your immunization forms directly to Boynton Health. Do NOT send your immunization information directly to the Medical School. The form must be completed by your healthcare provider and returned to Boynton Health by October 1, 2025. Boynton will begin accepting student health records the first week of July.
After submitting your completed immunization form to Boynton, you can check your immunization status and download/print a personalized version of your form by logging into the MyBoynton Patient Portal with your x500 (your university email, without @umn.edu) and email password.

All medical students are required to submit proof of vaccination for clinical placement. No exemptions will be accepted.

All medical students are required to complete both HIPAA and Information Security Awareness online modules by October 1st of MS1 fall semester.
These online modules are required for all students who come into contact with patients and medical records. Students complete these modules once at the beginning of their medical education. Students who are not compliant will receive a hold on their record preventing spring enrollment.

All medical students are required to complete the Bloodborne Pathogens Annual OSHA Requirement.
This is a one-time training for incoming medical students and must be completed by October 1st. This online module is required for anyone who may come into contact with human blood, BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens, and other potentially infectious materials. Students who are not compliant will receive a hold on their record preventing future enrollment.

According to the Minnesota Statute S144.0574, a passing background study is required in order to have direct patient contact. For questions, please contact ume-req@umn.edu.
Part 1 of 2: Initiate the background study by submitting your application online at NetStudy2.0 Applicant. Applications will be verified by the Registrar starting in mid-July. Do not submit your application before July 1st.
Part 2 of 2: Within 14 days of your application being verified, visit an authorized fingerprinting location to complete the process.
Please visit the MN Background Study Compliance website for detailed information. You must have a completed background study on file by October 1 of your MS1 year.
