Global Education Research Initiative

The College of Education and Human Development has created a new Global Education Research initiative to help faculty, staff, and students. The three main goals of this initiative are:

1. Identify and secure international research funding (list of current funding opportunities here)

2. Strengthen international partnerships and relationships with alumni (e.g., Seoul National University Partnership)

3. Strengthen capacity and mentoring for international research

To guide this work, The Global Education Research Initiative has also created a working paper that outlines goals, principles, and practices to consider when conducting international and interdisciplinary research in current and challenging times. 

The Global Education Research Initiative is led by Joan DeJaeghere, Director, and Nancy Pellowski Wiger, Research Associate.

Global Education Research Learning Community

As part of Goal #3, CEHD created a Global Education Research Learning Community to help faculty and staff foster global innovation and research. The Learning Community is a space for faculty and staff who are both new and experienced in conducting global research to connect. Participants meet other researchers interested in conducting international research, as well as CEHD and UMN staff that support this work. These meetings offer a dedicated time to come together in a community to network, discuss global education research experiences and challenges, share ideas for funding, and learn about research support in CEHD.  

The four sessions discussed the following topics in Spring 2026.  See related presentations for each of these topics. 

1. Session 1: Introduction to the Global Education Research learning community, discussion of global education research principles and practices, and current issues in global education research

2. Session 2: Pat Briscoe (Associate Director, Export Controls and Research Security, Research & Innovation Office) discussed data privacy/protection and IP considerations with global research

3. Session 3: Heidi Huff (Assistant Finance Director, CEHD) described financial considerations when conducting international research

4. Session 4: Kevin Dostal Dauer (Director of International Health, Safety, & Compliance, Global Programs and Strategy Alliance) outlined things to consider when conducting research abroad, traveling abroad, or bringing international researchers to the US
