Cardiovascular Critical Care
Critical Care Cardiology is a rapidly evolving field shaped by the increasing medical complexity of patients in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) and recent advancements in cardiovascular care, most notably innovations in mechanical circulatory support devices including ECMO, impella, and intra-aortic balloon pump. The scope of cardiac critical care has expanded from peri-infarct care to encompass the treatment of both acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions that necessitate advanced treatment modalities and stabilization.
Critical Care Cardiologists are responsible for providing comprehensive intensive care services including management of ARDS, septic shock, and hemorrhagic shock with expertise in ventilator management, bronchoscopy, chest tubes, inotropes and pressors. These services, applied to patients with complex cardiovascular pathology, often require nuanced care with the addition of acute cardiovascular stabilization and management. Critical care cardiologists also embrace the multidisciplinary approach to complex medical care which is a hallmark of modern critical care with collaboration across the medical spectrum to bring all necessary resources to the bedside for optimal 24/7 care.
We are engaged in all aspects of Critical Care Cardiology including advanced and innovative clinical care, education of trainees at every level with interest in this rapidly expanding field, and research to advance our approach to these complex patients. In addition, we work to develop the field itself through the yearly Critical Care Cardiology Education Summit and close collaboration with the Society of Critical Care Cardiology, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association. Our faculty are leaders in the field and in each of these collaborating organizations with involvement in writing guidelines and building the field of Critical Care Cardiology.
The Critical Care Cardiology Section has created a first-of-its-kind Critical Care Cardiology Fellowship housed within the Division of Cardiovascular Disease and led by Dr. Andrea Elliott. This fellowship provides comprehensive critical care medicine fellowship training with additional cardiovascular-focused training to ensure that graduate entering the modern Cardiovascular ICU are ready to manage the complex patients and complex hemodynamic support devices including ECMO.
