The University of Minnesota Medical Center – East Bank in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a leading hospital that cares for patients with highly complex medical conditions. The center is recognized for its expertise in a wide range of specialties, including solid organ transplantation, blood and marrow transplantation, cardiology, and oncology. It also serves as the primary site for Critical Care Cardiology, housing a specialized team of physicians and nursing staff trained in the care of ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) patients with a dedicated unit in the hospital.
UMMC - East Bank is the home of post-cardiac arrest care with close collaboration with the University of Minnesota Center for Resuscitation Medicine and the Minnesota Mobile Resuscitation Consortium. This community-wide extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation program provides rapid ECMO cannulation and stabilization of patients with refractory cardiac arrest across the Twin City Metro area. These patients, once cannulated, are transported to the University of Minnesota Medical Center to receive post-arrest and ECMO care from the Critical Care Cardiology team. The team, including attending physicians, cardiovascular disease fellows, and advanced practice providers, are also integrated into the code blue team to provide similar high quality ECPR services to patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest at the University of Minnesota. Located at the junction of critical care, cardiac stabilization, and cardiology, the Critical Care Cardiology section also leads the pulmonary embolus response team at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in partnership with interventional radiology.
