PRELIMINARY WRITTEN EXAM SOLUTIONS:
Below are the solutions to the Fall 2019 prelims offered at the University of Minnesota. The solutions bear striking resemblance to those of the previous prelims written by Montie Avery, Cora Brown, Bruno Poggi, Harini Chandramouli, Sunita Chepuri, Adrienne Sands, Michelle Mastrianni and Jasper Weinburd, among others whose names I have unknowingly and apologetically omitted.
Besides thanking the aforementioned and all who helped them, I thank John O'Brien for co-authoring some of the solutions.
To err is human, but too err is me (bad pun, I know). Consequently, there may be errors in my solutions. Should you notice one, please let me know so that I can rectify it.
BEYOND MATHEMATICS:
At times I find myself writing poetry, taking photographs, and sketching cityscapes. I am too shy to post them online, however, for a taste you may check out the banner photo on my homepage or read the piece below.
Today
For days on now, the darkest cloud
Has kept pouring. Whisper-loud
The rain patters, which, before you know
Turns to soft flakes of snow.
Inside, warm, by a candle flickering,
I find myself with me bickering
Over problems poorly understood.
But oft the cars in the neighborhood
Perturb my line of thought.
I tried, but today I just cannot
Bring myself to discover
Despite being an ardent lover
Of mathematics.
