Graduate students: we are currently accepting graduate students! Prior to admittance to the group, students must first apply and be admitted to our graduate program: https://cse.umn.edu/chem/application
Applications are due in the fall (~late November) for admission in the following academic year. After admission, graduate students would typically rotate among 3 groups and talk to many possible advisors before submitting their selection preferences.
Undergraduate students: availability of positions varies. Interested students are encouraged to contact the PI to inquire about research positions. Because of the intensive training required to begin research in our lab, most undergraduate students will commit at least 1 year to research including a summer. Information about summer research funding can be found here: Heisig and UROP. Please include a statement of interest (2-3 sentences), a CV, and transcript with your email.
Postdoctoral scholars: we are currently seeking talented and highly motivated postdocs! Please note that we do not currently have any openings. However, fellowship funding may be supplied through an external agency, such as the AAUW, the NSF, and the NIH (among others). Prospective postdocs should contact Gwen to inquire. Write "Prospective [agency] postdoc" in the title of the email and include a statement of interest (4-5 sentences), a CV, and your two most relevant first-author publications in the email. Please note that we cannot guarantee a response to emails not adhering to this format.
AUW’s International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships promote education and equity for women by investing in international applicants who will be pursuing postdoctoral research in the U.S., with the intention of applying their expertise, professional skills, and leadership in the context of their home countries. In addition, up to five awards are available to Graduate Women International (see the list of GWI affiliates) members for study in any country other than their own. International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are specifically designed for women who are non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents, with a track record of academic excellence and empowering other women and girls. The program has been supporting international women pursuing full-time postgraduate and postdoctoral research in the United States since 1917.
NSF Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellowships supports postdoctoral fellows performing impactful research across all fields supported by NSF MPS while broadening the participation of groups that are underrepresented in the mathematical and physical sciences.
NIH Individual fellowship programs provide mentored research experience to students and scientists at various stages of their careers. These fellowships may provide a stipend, institutional allowance to help support the costs of training, tuition and fees, and childcare costs. The majority of NIH-funded fellowships are through the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) program. Some NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) may also participate in non-NRSA individual fellowship.
