Gwendolyn A. Bailey

Prof. Gwen Bailey studied chemistry at the University of British Columbia, earning an honors B.Sc. in inorganic chemistry 2012, where her research on the development of new metal-based radiopharmaceuticals with Professor Chris Orvig earned her the Lefevre Medal & Prize in Honors Chemistry. She also spent time in the industrial research labs of Arbutus Biopharma (Burnaby, BC) and Xerox Research Center Canada, where she was focused on the synthesis of lipid-based siRNA delivery vesicles and organic electronics. From there, she moved to Ottawa to pursue research with Professor Deryn Fogg as an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral (CGS-D) fellow. This research led to the discovery of previously unrecognized or dismissed decomposition pathways relevant to the highly utilized second-generation Grubbs and Hoveyda catalysts for olefin metathesis, thereby charting a path for improved performance. In 2018, she accepted a Resnick Sustainability Institute and NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship to pursue research at the California Institute of Technology with Professor Theodor Agapie, where she studied rare open-shell molybdenum carbide and carbyne complexes for C–C coupling methodologies and biomimetic cluster synthesis for N2 fixation. Gwen started her independent research career at the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry in 2021, where she is currently an Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry.
