Building Leaders, One Campfire at a Time
UMSI student leaders stepped outside their comfort zones during the inaugural Student Life Overnight Adventure Retreat, gaining new skills, friendships, and confidence along the way.
Over fall break, eight UMSI student leaders joined Student Life staff for a retreat held at the Adventure Education Center, which brought together students for two days of team building, outdoor learning, and connection.
Led by the Michigan Recreation Adventure Leadership staff, participants learned hands-on skills like setting up tents, cooking over a campfire, and navigating the wooded trails of the Radrick property. Beyond outdoor know-how, the retreat emphasized leadership development and collaboration, helping students form meaningful relationships across programs and roles.
The retreat was organized by UMSI’s Student Life team, which supports co-curricular learning, student organizations, and leadership development opportunities that strengthen the UMSI community. Mark Holmgren, Student Life Program Manager, shared, “We wanted to create an experience that encouraged students to step outside of their routines, connect in new ways, and gain comfortability engaging with the great outdoors. Leadership looks different for everyone, and this retreat gave students the space to explore that while having fun together.”

Two participants attempt a teamwork balance game, meant to challenge both communication and footing.
“It was nice to disconnect for a bit and spend time in nature,” said MHI student Chandra Behr, who especially enjoyed a balance-based group challenge that encouraged creative problem-solving and trust. BSI student Benjamin Roesler added, “I was hesitant at first because I’m not used to camping outside, but the environment was so welcoming and fun. I got so much closer with all these new faces very quickly on this short retreat.”
By the end of the trip, students left not only with new skills but also with a stronger sense of community and confidence in their ability to lead in any environment.
With instruction from Adventure Leadership staff, UMSI students actively learn to build the tent they spent the night in.
Participants learn to communicate through a balance and rearrangement game, where everyone must switch posts without falling from the wooden planks.
