The Physics Department guarantees medical and dental care to all of its students and their qualified dependents from the time they enter the program until they defend. Please speak with the Graduate Program Coordinator at any time if you have questions or concerns about your healthcare coverage.
GradCare is a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) with low out-of-pocket costs that is exclusively available to benefit-eligible graduate students. This includes GSIs, GRSAs, GSSAs and benefit-eligible fellowship holders. The University of Michigan's GradCare plan is administered by BlueCare Network (BCN). Learn all about it through the UM Human Resources website here.
Physics graduate students are given dental coverage as part of their overall provided healthcare. The University of Michigan dental plan, administered by Delta Dental of Michigan, is designed to promote regular dental visits and good oral health, a key part of your overall wellness. Learn more about UM dental coverage here.
How do I sign up for my health coverage? As a graduate student, you are automatically enrolled in GradCare and Dental Plan Option 1 benefits. If you want to change anything, you will have to make those changes yourself during the first 30 days of Fall term your first year or during the Open Enrollment Period (usually October/early November each year). Adding/removing dependents can typically be done at any time, but please check with the UM Benefits Office. Visit this site for information on enrolling or changing your benefits.
Graduate students do not receive vision coverage (i.e. glasses or eye exams) as part of their department paid healthcare. Vision coverage is available to graduate students through the University for a low monthly cost and students can elect it during their benefits enrollment. Find out more here.
Another add-on benefit that students can consider is legal services. Student Legal Services is a full service law office providing legal advice and counseling on a wide variety of subjects including housing, criminal, family, consumer, and traffic law. SLS also litigates cases on behalf of UM students. If you're thinking of electing this benefit, you can find out more about SLS here.
University of Michigan students have many free, low-cost, or insurance paid health and well-being resources available to them. Linked below are just some of these services. If you are looking for something not listed here, talk to an SSO staff member.
PLANNING TO SPEND SOME TIME OUTSIDE OF MICHIGAN AND NEED TO RETAIN YOUR HEALTHCARE?
To obtain expanded coverage outside the GradCare network or affiliated providers, students must complete an off-site registration form prior to the beginning of the academic off-campus study term. To get this form, go to the umich.edu homepage and use the search tool to type in "Off-site Registration Form." The most recent version should be posted and can be downloaded for use. Follow the instructions at the top of the form. Note that it does require department endorsement; please see the Graduate Program Coordinator for this signature.
