Any student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor who is a member of U.S. Figure Skating is eligible to be on UMFSC! However, we do require some skating experience before joining the team as we do not provide private lessons, training, or equipment. If you are interested in learning to skate, we recommend the Ann Arbor Ice Cube or Chelsea Arctic Coliseum for Learn to Skate and private lessons!
The University of Michigan Figure Skating Club (UMFSC) team has practice at Yost Ice Arena. Pracitce frequency depends on whether the skater is part of the recreational or competitive team. Our recreational team practices twice a week while our competitive team practices three to four times a week. Each practice is 50 minutes long. In addition to our team ice, many members of UMFSC skate at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube through an access membership.
UMFSC is a U.S. Figure Skating's Intercollegiate team in the Midwest region. We compete at three regional competition each year in an attempt to qualify for National Intercollegiate Final.
Before each of our 3-4 competitions we host an exhibition of our skaters as a send-off. We also hold a fun-filled holiday show each winter and a spring show at the end of the school year! You can check out our calendar or our Instagram for dates and times.
Our competitive team competes in three midwestern regional competitions each season. Currently, the competitive team practices 3 to 4 times a week at Yost Ice Arena (including 1 weekly combined practice with the recreational team). While competitive team skaters are not required to compete, in order to be eligible for Intercollegiate Nationals, skaters must compete at at least 2 regional competitions. Pending qualification, the team will compete at Intercollegiate Nationals in April. The competitive team is comprised of a wide range of skating levels. Skaters can compete in singles, solo free dance, and pattern dance. US Collegiate Skating uses the 6.0 system to judge collegiate competitions. Dues for the competitive team include practice at Yost, social events, competition travel and lodging, and registration fees. For more questions about dues or the competitive team, reach out to mfigureskating@umich.edu or @umichskating on Instagram.
Our recreational team holds practices twice a week, one of which will be combined with the competitive team. Skaters on the Recreational Team will have the opportunity to perform at both our holiday and spring shows, as well as participate in social events. This team is ideal for skaters looking to continue skating in college with a lesser time commitment.
