Call for Manuscripts:

Special Issue of Social Work Research on Applying and Theorizing Intersectionality in Social Work Research

Due date extended to January 31, 2020

Purpose

This website is to provide additional information and resources on intersectionality for those interested in submitting an article for this special issue. More details about selection criteria and process are on this page.

More details and resources are below and in tabs to the left.

Goals

The official “call” for the special issue can be found on the Call for Submissions page. This describes how to submit the manuscript and some basic goals and criteria. The major goals are:

  1. applying and theorizing core components of “strong” intersectionality in social work research.
  2. demonstrating the application of research using intersectionality frameworks and methods, within different social justice arenas or social work practice areas. Contributions with global perspectives are welcome as are systematic reviews on intersectionality in social work practice or education.

We wish partly to illustrate how social work research can be enriched by the complexity of these approaches, and also believe that social work can add substantially to the evolution and application of intersectionality frameworks. Social workers focus on working for change for justice, in multiple contexts, with individuals, groups, families, communities, organizations, policies and so forth, and on producing knowledge to inform these goals. Thus, social work has much to contribute by expanding our understanding about implementing these approaches through pro-justice programs and actions.

Criteria for Selection

  • Solidly grounded in "strong"/critical intersectionality frameworks, both epistemologically and methodologically
  • Represent a range of different mixes of positionalities and application foci
  • Clarity of methodologies and methods used (in practice and/or scholarship)
  • Manuscripts must clearly demonstrate/articulate how intersectionality is being applied to the core research question and deployed analytically within the arenas being applied

The guest editors will review initially for suitability for the special issue. Then papers will be sent out for peer review (double-blind), per the journal's guidelines. Those receiving favorable reviews will be invited to go through the next phases of the review process. Since only a limited number of articles can be accepted for this special issue, those reviewed positively but not accepted for the special issue will be considered for another issue of the journal.
