Learn how STEM teachers in Utqiaġvik use community resources in their classrooms
Utqiaġvik is a unique community where Iñupiaq values are defined and celebrated. Schools are a bridge between these cultural values and the perspectives of the Western world. Before designing activities, we want to learn what teachers are already doing to affirm the diverse cultures in their classroom.
Collaborate with STEM teachers to design culturally relevant classroom activities
What we design together should align with the diverse perspectives of the community. The activities should also explore ideas that matter to the community. To do this, we will bring together STEM teachers, community members, scientists, and education researchers to collaboratively design classroom materials.
Support STEM teachers in using classroom activities through a learning community
Teachers will likely adapt the activities after the design process to meet the unique needs of their schools, classrooms, and students. To support them in this adaptation process, we will partner with teachers to host Faculty Learning Communities. In these communities, teachers work together to look at student data and make changes that make the most sense for their classrooms.
