Design
For our redesign, we first focused on the navigation bar, in which users can find information about elections, driver’s licenses, vehicle information, business services, and the Secretary of State. To make this design more aligned with Fitts’s law, we removed the dropdown buttons on all of the navigation links, and instead made these navigation boxes expand when hovered over. This made the distance between the user’s initial mouse location and the election dropdown menu location closer together, thus improving the speed in which the user can perform an action. The original distance from the top right corner of the screen to the elections drop down menu is 1143.11 pixels and the width of the drop down menu button is 22 pixels. With our new design, the new distance is around 1141 pixels from the top right corner of the screen to the Elections drop down menu and the new width of the menu is around 180 pixels. Giving the users a larger space to access the drop down menu improves the accuracy in performing that action.
For the dropdown menu, we added more hierarchy to the menu items, to organize them in a way that makes it easier for the user to locate exactly what link they are searching for. The drop down is organized into the four sections: voter information, election information, committees, and forms. The original distance from the election drop down menu to the three dots to expand the voter information section is about 403 pixels and the width of the three dots is 48 pixels. With our redesign, we significantly cut down on the distance from the elections drop down menu to voter information, with a new distance of 303 pixels. Additionally, we changed the three dots design to a carrot design so the user knows that the voter information section expands. We made the carrot design larger than the three dots, with a new width of 55 pixels in order to increase accuracy when expanding this menu. We believe this redesign will help improve the overall user experience of the website and ensure that users will be able to perform all of their actions accurately.
