ONLINE OBSERVATION PROCESS
The peer observation and coaching process guides faculty in continuously improving their online courses. This confidential process emphasizes sharing ideas and experiences and culminates in a concise, written document shared only between the faculty and observer.
Steps for Initiating & Conducting an Online Course Observation
PRE-OBSERVATION
Course Instructor
The faculty member initiates a virtual classroom observation by completing the Observation Request Form. Instructors can choose their coaching partnership, or ODE will arrange the match.
Download the Peer Observation Self Review-Online and review the Self-Assessment section. (Click file/download to make a copy.)
Identifies one to three Observation goals on the final pages of the report.
Forwards Peer Observation Report to their Faculty Coach.
Faculty Coach
Contact the Course Instructor to schedule the Pre-Observation Meeting to clarify observation goals, where to find items in the course, and any other relevant questions.
Note: ODE will provide temporary access to the Course Instructor’s course.
OBSERVATION
Faculty Coach
Receives the Peer Observation Self Review-Online from the Course Instructor. Schedules meetings as necessary to identify evidence and seek clarification about the course design. (Click file/download to make a copy.)
Completes the Peer Observation Report-Online. (Click file/download to make a copy.)
Forward this draft report to the instructor.
POST-OBSERVATION
Faculty Coach
Debriefs the Course Instructor as to findings in the report in a Post-Observation Meeting.
Finalizes the Peer Observation Report-Online (Click file/download to make a copy.)
Forwards the completed report to the instructor.
Confirms completion on the
Peer Observation Completion Form: INSTRUCTOR.
Course Instructor
In the Post-Observation Meeting, seeks clarification and Advice. With Coach's consultation, develops an action plan.
