Project Overwatch was the teams first competition rocket built for IREC which competed at the 2017 Spaceport America Cup in Las Cruces, New Mexico in the COTS 10,000K category.
The rocket featured student developed composite body tubes and a ballute as the rocket's drougue parachute. The rocket was intitally designed to house a deployable payload that would recover independently from the rocket. Due to complications with the design the system had to be cut pre-flight. Overwatch did not launch at competition but did launch out of the Muskegon Wastewater Treatment Facility in Muskegon, MI on July 29, 2018. The rocket's main parachute deployed at apogee and drifted into the nearby wastewater pond and was recovered two months later after the pond was drained.
Proeject Overwatch garnered a 18th place finish out of 45 teams in the design implementation section of competition scoring. This category judges each team on "overall competency of design, quality of construction, and strategic design decisions exhibited by their work."
