The University of Michigan is one of the nation’s finest institutions, consistently earning high rankings and international acclaim in numerous fields of study, ranging from the liberal arts to medicine to public policy to information sciences. Our faculty are world leaders in research. We encourage you to get to know them and will be happy to make introductions for you.
U-M uses the Google Workspace platform for email, calendar, documents, and other resources. All Fellows will have their own Google workspace, which includes a umich.edu email account (powered by Gmail) and Google calendar. You will be expected to check your umich email account regularly, as well as your umich Google calendar. Since most of you already have personal gmail accounts, incorporating the umich email and calendar into your daily routines should be fairly easy. If you haven’t done so already, we recommend downloading the Gmail and Google Calendar apps on your device so that you can access your umich account easily.
You will be issued a U-M ID card, known as an “MCard.” This serves as a photo ID, and in some cases as a key to enter University buildings after hours and also as a bus pass for the Ann Arbor city buses. You should have your MCard with you whenever you are on campus. Cardholders have access to many discounts.
The University of Michigan has a wealth of libraries catering to virtually every area of study, no matter how obscure. There are nearly 20 specialized university libraries and collections, including those dedicated to fine arts, government information, maps, music, health sciences, art, architecture and engineering, special collections and even papyrology. Begin your discovery at the library homepage.

She will give you a brief tour of the Hatcher and Shapiro library buildings on central campus as well as a hands on orientation to the library website and online resources. Feel free to schedule a one-on-one appointment with her at any time.

Fellows are often invited to serve as a guest lecturer in different classes and events around campus. Fellows have no obligation to accept these invitations, although sharing real-world experience and interacting with the university and Ann Arbor communities could be an enriching experience for Fellows, students and everyone else involved. Most classes and events will be held virtually this fall, providing opportunities for you to be involved with campus engagements remotely.
Legendary CBS newsman and University of Michigan alum Mike Wallace (1918-2012) was an enthusiastic and generous supporter of our programs endowing an investigative reporting fellowship, donating an additional $1 million to the fellowship program and serving as a Livingston Awards judge for more than two decades. Perhaps the most precious gift Wallace and his wife Mary bestowed upon us is our beautiful Arts and Crafts-style home, purchased in 1992. Named Wallace House in their honor, it serves as the heart of the fellowship, housing the offices for our programs, as well as providing a gathering space for Fellowship activities.
The University of Michigan has an excellent bus system, which will take you anywhere you need to go on campus. The buses are only for U-M community members (including Knight-Wallace Fellows), but you will not be asked for your MCard when you board (but you should have your MCard on you at all times).
During the school year, there are three bus lines that stop at Wallace House:
· Northwood Express (NX) - mornings
· Diag-to-Diag (DD) - afternoons
· Oxford Shuttle (OS) - evenings
You can research U-M bus routes here:

U-M community members can ride the Ann Arbor Area Transit Authority (AAATA) bus for free with an MCard. You must swipe your MCard upon boarding the bus. At least two bus routes, #4 and #23, stop within a couple blocks of Wallace House.
You can research AAATA bus routes here:
International Fellows are required to coordinate with the International Center on a number of important matters, including your stipends (where applicable) and healthcare. More information will be provided, but in the meantime, you may consult the International Center website to address many of your questions:
There are a number of dining halls throughout campus that you may pay out of pocket to use throughout the academic year. Although there are a number of restaurants, cafes, and carry-out food options throughout campus, some previous Fellows have enjoyed the convenience of U-M dining halls. Individual meals can be purchased using a credit card (most expensive), by adding “Blue Bucks” to your MCard (less expensive), or you can purchase a meal plan (least expensive per meal, but the biggest commitment). If you are interested in purchasing a meal plan, notify the Wallace House staff for the next steps. In the meantime, you can find more information here:
