Dr. Karestan Koenen's Lab – Neuropsychiatric Genetics of African Populations (NeuroGAP)-Psychosis Study
NeuroGAP-Psyhosis study description: NeuroGAP-Psychosis is a case-control study with a target of N=40,000 (20,000 people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and 20,000 controls). The project aims to deepen our understanding of the genetic architecture of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder through large-scale sample collection and analyses in understudied African populations.
Senior research coordinator
Remotely supervise three field-based African teams comprising 30+ local employees (project managers, research assistants, clinicians, and database coordinators)
Visit study sites and work directly with Country Principal Investigators (PIs), Country Program Managers, and Research Assistants to operationalize the NeuroGAP-Psychosis Study protocol, help ensure raters understand the questionnaires, work with lab teams to track and ship DNA from saliva specimens, obtain import/export permits, oversee on-site trainings, and data clean thousands of participant records
Wet lab capacity building
Manage all wet lab operations: create sustainable capacity building practices with African teams (such as organizing the development of the first Ethiopian biobank) as well as track and order wet lab supplies
Institutional Review Board (IRB) correspondence
Draft full IRB submissions, including protocols, consent documents, study schema, and recruitment materials; maintain regulatory documents for all studies in accordance IRB guidelines
Preparation and submission of grant proposals
Chief operational lead for Dr. Karestan Koenen’s research portfolio and administrative duties
