Julie C Lumeng, M.D.

Principal Investigator  


Dr. Lumeng completed medical school and a pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan, and a developmental and behavioral pediatrics fellowship at the Boston University School of Medicine. She joined the University of Michigan as faculty in 2003, and her research lab started studying children in the community shortly after. Her research focus is on the biology underlying maternal feeding practices, the development of eating behaviors in infancy and early childhood, and their influence on healthy growth. Her goal is to contribute to the understanding of these behaviors, which will then help support the emotional and physical well being of children and their parents. She currently holds appointments at the University of Michigan as the Associate Dean for Clinical Research for the Medical School, Associate Vice President for Research-Clinical and Human Subjects Research, and Executive Director of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research. She also is the Thomas P. Borders Family Research Professor of Child Behavior and Development, in addition to a Professor of Pediatrics in the Medical School, and a Professor of Nutritional Sciences in the School of Public Health. Through these positions she aids in developing and facilitating clinical and translational investigations across the research spectrum.

Amanda K Crandall, Ph.D.

Post-Doctoral Fellow 


Dr. Crandall earned her undergraduate degrees in Nutrition and Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and completed her Master’s degree in Psychological Science at Montana State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Community Health and Health Behavior from the University at Buffalo, where she was a recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (F31) from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Her past work has examined the influence of food insecurity and laboratory manipulations of financial scarcity on food motivation, the development of eating behavior, psychological stress, and behavioral impulsivity. Her work postdoctoral research, funded by the University of Michigan Pediatric Endocrinology Training Program (T32), examined the developmental origins of appetite from pregnancy through infancy.  She is currently finishing her postdoctoral work, funded by a Pathway to Independence Award (K99) from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development, which examines infant bottle-feeding behavior with a particular focus on sucking behavior and satiety responsiveness.

Alex Jeanpierre, M.P.H.

Project Manager

Alex received her MPH in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She has served as the Lumeng Lab manager since the fall of 2019. In her role she plans, directs, and oversees all research, administrative, and operational matters for the lab. 

Sarah Peterson, B.S.

Research Technician Senior


Sarah Peterson completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Eastern Michigan University in 2017. Her research interests include child health and development, specifically children’s behavioral and mental health. She has worked with the Lumeng Lab on the ABC Baby Study and is currently working on the ABC Baby Reward Study and the ABC Growing Kids Study. 

Claire Dennis, B.A.

Research Technician Associate


Claire Dennis graduated from the University of Michigan in 2023 with her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. During undergraduate, she worked in a pediatric cardiology lab and as a research assistant in FAST Lab, studying food addiction. She is interested in studying forensic psychology and criminal justice in youth populations in the future. Claire is currently working on the ABC Growing Kids Study and the Mother Baby Study.

Jill Vaishnav, B.S.

Research Technician Associate


Jill Vaishnav graduated from the University of Michigan in 2024 with her Bachelor of Science in Public Health. She has previously worked as a Research Assistant for the Bauer Research Group in both the Listening to Parents and SPROUT studies which examined the stigmatizing situations that parents of children with obesity face and how mothers' and children's self-regulation impacts the development of early childhood obesity, respectively. She is interested in continuing research within early childhood development and nutrition as well as exploring adolescent LGBTQ+ healthcare. Jill is currently working as a Research Technician Associate on the Mother Baby study. 


Misha Asim, B.S.

Research Technician Associate 

Misha Asim completed her Bachelor of Science in Public Health Honors at Wayne State University in 2022. Previously, she completed research at the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development involving physiological science to determine the effects of HOCl-mediated heme destruction in iNOS through melatonin. Her areas of research currently lies in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of Michigan. As a Research Technician Associate, she contributes to studying the relationship between eating behaviors and early childhood development as it relates to dietary quality and patterns and works on the ABC Growing Kids Study and the Mother Baby Study.

Savannah Covault, B.S.

Research Technician Associate


Savannah Covault earned their Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from Eastern Michigan University in December of 2023. They worked in the Contextual Behavioral Science Lab studying how college students intersect with the legal system and how it may affect their mental health. They are interested in pursuing Criminal Psychology and how it intersects with Forensic Sciences. Savannah is currently working on the ABC Growing Kids Study.

Summer Eubank, B.S.

Research Technician Associate

Summer Eubank graduated from the University of Michigan in 2021 with her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. She has experience working as an undergraduate research assistant at the Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center focusing on improving patient outcomes for patients and families affected by Differences of Sex Disorder (DSD). In addition, she has worked at a local non-profit, Community Action Network of Ann Arbor, as an After-School Program Assistant aiding their youth educational and enrichment programs. She is interested in evolutionary psychology/anthropology, specifically allomaternal care & reproductive strategies within various non-human primate species. Currently, she is working as a Research Technician Associate on the Mother Baby Study within the Lumeng Lab.

Vasi Andreopoulos, B.S.

Research Technician Intermediate

Vasi Andreopoulos graduated from Michigan State University as part of the Lyman Briggs College in May of 2023, with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology. Previously, she has worked at a family practice, interning in quality management and shadowing physicians. She also loves doing volunteer work and working with children. She is working towards pursuing medicine. Vasi is currently working on the ABC Growing Kids Study.
