I am currently the Sexton Chair in Reinforcement Learning and an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am also an Affiliate Member of Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, Canada, and a principal member of AI Atlantic: Atlantic Canada Research Consortium.
My research interests lie primarily in reinforcement learning (RL), a branch of machine learning and artificial intelligence focused on learning from interactions and sequential decision-making. My work centers on deep reinforcement learning (deep RL), which combines deep learning, which uses artificial neural networks to learn useful representations from complex unstructured data, with RL methods. This allows RL agents to make decisions directly from high-dimensional inputs such as images, text, or rich sensor data. I am interested in both foundational research in deep RL and its interdisciplinary applications, with potential impact across sectors including business management, healthcare, transportation, energy, and manufacturing. My research so far has contributed to deep RL methods that: 1) automatically discover what to learn, 2) enable effective cooperation among multiple agents (multi-agent RL), 3) build environment models for efficient learning, 4) follow natural language instructions and assist with large language model (LLM) and dialog system training, and 5) support interdisciplinary applications, including material discovery, dynamic pricing, tuning distributed IoT systems, and optimizing ICU treatment strategies.

Prior to my current positions, I was an IVADO Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute and the University of Montréal (UdeM), Canada, working with Prof. Sarath Chandar and Prof. Doina Precup. I completed my Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering (stream: Artificial Intelligence) at the University of Michigan (UMich), Ann Arbor, USA, working with Prof. Satinder Singh, and completed my B.Tech. and M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering (major stream: Communication Engineering, minor stream: Physics) at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), India, working with Prof. Balaraman Ravindran and Prof. Kaushik Mitra.
