Research

Student-led research projects are the centerpiece of IEDP. Each year, several themes for the projects are selected based on the policy interests of the cohort. Groups then work throughout the term, and through their trip, to shape and investigate specific research questions related to their themes. Interviews of key stakeholders in the country comprise a critical component of this research, and serve as a defining part of the IEDP experience.

Research topics to be addressed by the IEDP Morocco team are summarized below.

Statistical Capacity and Data Management

What are the main challenges that confront Morocco as it aims to develop a suitable institutional framework for monitoring and evaluating progress on the SDGs? Morocco has identified this concern as a key "line of action" in implementing its sustainable development plan, as government officials feel that the inability to collect/maintain good data has compromised its ability to track progress and follow up on outcomes/insights. For overall coherence of the Morocco IEDP, students working on this project are strongly encouraged to focus on the SDGs and specific measurable targets that figure prominently in the other IEDP projects.

Environmental Sustainability

What policy options does Morocco have for addressing drought (water shortage) and ensuring continuous supply of water for human consumption and for agricultural production throughout the country? Note that In June 2018 Morocco announced intentions to extend its plan for water management until 2050.

inclusive Development - Employment Opportunities

What are the prospects for addressing the employment gap, especially for new entrants to the job market, including those with high school and/or university diplomas? Specifically, to what extent can "green jobs" and "eco-tourism" open up new employment opportunities?

Inclusive Development - women and Girls

What policies has Morocco used to close as much of the gender gap as it has, and what policies could help further advance the goals? (This project will focus on the past -- good practices, lessons learned -- and look ahead.)
