GIFs or other animations included in materials (documents, presentations, videos, or webpages) should only loop for a maximum of 5 seconds and should not flicker, flash, or blink.
Moving or blinking content is distracting/irritating to people who have sensory processing disorders, which commonly co-occur in people who live with developmental disabilities, attention deficit disorders, or traumatic brain injury, among other conditions. Flashing content has been shown to trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
Use EZGIF or other tool to limit the number of times a GIF loops.
Ensure there is a caption or alt text describing what is depicted in the GIF. If content is being presented live, provide a verbal description of what is happening in the GIF.
People who are Blind or have visual impairments will not be able to physically see the GIF. This can prevent them from understanding or feeling included, especially if the GIF is used to communicate relevant information or to generate a shared reaction (e.g., laughter).
Alt text can be added to GIFs in the same manner as other images: see Images.
This GIF of Cookie Monster loops 5 times and then pauses. Alt text has been included.
