GGM@Dearborn 2023
In 2023 the GirlsGetMath@Dearborn program ran for 5 days, August 14-18, at the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters at UM - Dearborn. There were 18 participants from various cities in southeast Michigan.
The major themes this year were Matrix Algebra, Recommendation Systems, Image Processing, Cryptology, Graph Theory and Apportionment (a.k.a. Fair Division). Students used the MATLAB programming language and Excel spreadsheets to apply and experiment with the new concepts they learned.
We had a special treat in the middle of the week when Margaret Upton from the NSA spent the day with us and led an interactive lecture on various cryptographic systems. Later that day the students had the unique opportunity to hear from a panel of invited special guests and accomplished women working in STEM – Margaret Upton from NSA, Jaya Lekshmi, Siying Liu and Michelle Wu, from MathWorks, Autumn Tashman from Ally Financial and Alexandria Sullens from UM – Dearborn.
Participants learned about the college admissions process from U-M Dearborn’s Office of Admissions staff and talked about college life with the program’s teaching assistants. The highlight of the campus tour was a visit of the Robotics Lab, where Prof. Alireza Mohammadi showcased the lab’s equipment and discussed current research trends in Robotics.
This year the program was led by Profs. Yulia Hristova, Hyejin Kim and Aditya Viswanathan, and teaching assistants (and mathematics majors) Emilee Gootee, Katrina McKay, and Louisa Hoback.
The GirlsGetMath@Dearborn 2023 program was free for all admitted participants. This was possible thanks to the support by the Tensor Foundation through a grant from the Mathematical Association of America, the JetBlue Foundation through a grant from the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Michigan – Dearborn.
