Write & Revise
Overview
The Write & Revise Tool is a writing-focused tool that learners use to enter a piece of text, then return back to later on for editing one or more times so they can practice applying a particular course/composition concept.
Student-Facing Features
Rich Text Editing - Students can format text with bold and italic styles, as well as create lists and headings.
Before & After - Once students revise a piece of text, the tool shows them a side-by-side comparison view of their drafts.
Instructor-Facing Features
Linked Assignments - Instructors can associate one writing assignment with another, so that after a student creates an initial draft and goes to a subsequent revision assignment, the initial draft will appear there automatically for them to update.
Instructional Design Tips
This tool was designed with the following workflow in mind:
Student A enters the tool and is prompted to enter a piece of text (written by them or found elsewhere).
Student A returns to the LMS and reads about a given writing technique.
Student A re-enters the tool and revises their initial text according to the aforementioned writing technique.
Student A continues the pattern of studying writing techniques and revising the text.
Use Cases
Good with Words
In this Coursera-hosted MOOC, Write & Revise guides learners through a series of practice exercises. For example, in the “Meat and Potatoes” exercise students enter an original piece of text and then progressively revise it until all of the unnecessary words are removed.
FAQs
I want to use this tool in my course. How do I get started?
Before setting up the tool, think about the following:
What will the initial assignment look like for a series of revisions? What instructions will you provide?
What subsequent revisions or additions will students make to the initial text? What instructions will you provide?
Can I create multiple initial writing assignments?
Yes! To create multiple writing assignments, you simply need to create a new LTI item and choose to create a new assignment instead of linking to an existing one.
Can students edit their work later on?
Yes! Students can always come back to the tool to edit their drafts.
Can I use this tool for graded assignments?
No. While other tools, such as the Gamut Gallery Tool, support graded assignments, Write & Revise currently does not.
Can the tool be accessed from outside my LMS?
No, in order for anyone to authenticate into the tool they must come from an LTI item within an LMS. For that reason, there is no public-facing component to any Gamut Tool.
