Level 3 equipment are resources that REQUIRE BOTH a current LSA or CoE affiliation AND an orientation to be authorized for their use.
Orientations are provided only by Technology Library Assistants and generally last 5-10 minutes. Level 3 resources generally have more complicated hardware, have a higher chance of breaking/getting damaged, and/or can cause harm to people and property if not used properly. Orientations are intended to provide users with information regarding the operational and safety guidelines for each piece of equipment, rather than instruction on its operation.
LSA Technology Library staff reserve the right to withhold completion status for an orientation if they have concerns about your ability to use the equipment correctly. Furthermore, if any item you borrow is returned with clear evidence of improper handling, the staff may invalidate your orientation, indicating that you may not have understood or adhered to the proper usage guidelines.
There are two parts to our authorization process. All users must complete BOTH parts in order to become authorized to use Level 3 equipment:
Online Training Modules:
Enroll in the “LSA Technology Services - Equipment Orientations” Canvas course.
Complete the Introduction module AND appropriate Equipment Type training modules by reading the provided materials and earning a passing score of 90% on the knowledge check quizzes. Multiple attempts on the knowledge check quizzes are permitted.
In-Person Orientation:
Submit an Orientation Request Form to schedule a time to meet with an LSA Technology Library Assistant.* The Orientation Request Form can be found within the Canvas course in the module titled “Schedule Your Orientation”.
Attend the Orientation and complete all required demonstrations.
*Please DO NOT submit an Orientation Request Form before you earn a passing score of 90% for the Introduction module AND appropriate Equipment training module(s).
Be sure to plan ahead as the LSA Technology Library requires 24 business hours advance notice to schedule your orientation. Orientations scheduled with less than 24 hours of notice are generally not feasible.
Please arrive on time to your orientation. We offer a 10 minute grace period for all orientations. If you are more than 10 minutes late, your orientation will automatically be cancelled and you will need to reschedule.
No. The LSA Technology Library requires users to complete the authorization activity in part to be assured that the patron knows how to use this complicated/potentially dangerous equipment without damaging it or causing any harm to themselves or others. If you already know how to use the equipment, the authorization activity shouldn’t take too long.
No. You must complete an orientation for any Level 3 equipment first, before you can reserve or check them out.
The LSA Technology Library is happy to work with faculty members who train their students on our equipment to allow their students to bypass the orientation or hands-on training requirements (workshop requirements remain in place).
Not necessarily. The LSA Technology Library reserves the right to refuse to authorize you for Level 3 equipment if the employee you’re working with is not confident that you understand how to use the equipment or will use it in a responsible way. You can minimize the chance of this happening by actively engaging in the authorization activity
