Doppler motions

These two movies show the temperature structure (filled color contours) and wind field (arrows) of a hot Jupiter as it rotates during its orbit. The blue and red lines are contours of the line-of-sight velocity towards (blue) or away (red) from the observer, due to a combination of the winds and rotation of the planet. The movie on the left is for the planet HD 189733b, at about 0.3 mbar (around the pressure where strong absorption line cores form), while the one on the right is for the planet HD 209458b, at about 50 mbar (near the infrared photosphere).
