Fire Safety Tips - From Fire Safety at EHS
1. A space can become filled with smoke very quickly
2. It is very challenging to navigate a smoke-filled space
3. Knowing two escape routes to exit any space is important during a fire event
4. You may have only 3-4 minutes to escape a burning building
Additional Fire Safety Information
Smoke from a fire gathers at the ceiling and banks downward. It is difficult to traverse through a burning space due to smoke, heated gasses, hazardous chemicals and impaired visibility. Moving about while standing increases harmful exposure, it is much safety to get low and crawl towards a safe exit to escape.
This simulation uses a theatrical fog that mimics smoke to let participants safely experience the difficulties one may face trying to locate an escape exit during a real fire event.
EHS Fire Safety encourages everyone to maintain a safe living environment both on and off campus. Understanding the importance of maintaining safe exits and keeping early detection systems such as smoke detectors functioning properly is critical for everyone's safety.
All University Residence Halls and Campus Apartments have early fire alarm detection systems. These systems are in place to notify occupants of an event that requires them to exit the building. Understanding the value of the early notification helps an occupant to meet the timeline to escape quickly without difficulty.
Off campus housing is required to have working smoke detectors to provide residents the same early notification of an emergency as a building Fire Alarm system. Maintaining this equipment should be a high priority for students.
