Campus Fire Safety Month
@ The University of Michigan
Do You Know What To Do In Case Of A Fire?
These Campus Fire Safety Month Events are completed for 2023, we'll see you next Fall!
Learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher and
Challenge yourself to find a safe exit from the smoke trailer to earn a free T-shirt
Free Washtenaw Dairy Donuts and Cider!
The Know 2 Ways Out campaign calls attention to the need for everyone to identify 2 potential escape exits when entering a space.
U-M Environment, Health & Safety is partnering with the Division of Public Safety & Security, Student Life Facilities and the Ann Arbor Fire Department to share important fire safety information, including how to properly use a fire extinguisher.
All ages welcome, refreshments will be provided, and there will be a T-shirt give-away!
Thank you Canton Fire Department for use of their smoke trailer!
What Participants Can Expect
Participants will enter the trailer which is set up like a home environment. Fire Safety personnel will share key safety information, then the trailer will fill with simulated smoke so participants can experience how difficult it can be to locate a safe exit for escape during a fire. There will also be demonstrations for how to properly use a fire extinguisher, informational booths, and refreshments. Participants who choose to enter the simulated smoke trailer, accepting the "Know 2 Ways Out Challenge", earn a T-shirt!
Key Takeaways
1. A space can become filled with smoke very quickly
2. It is very challenging to navigate a smoke-filled space
3. Knowing two escape routes to exit any space is important during a fire event
4. You may have only 3-4 minutes to escape a burning building

Additional Fire Safety Information
Smoke from a fire gathers at the ceiling and banks downward. It is difficult to traverse through a burning space due to smoke, heated gasses, hazardous chemicals and impaired visibility. Moving about while standing increases harmful exposure, it is much safety to get low and crawl towards a safe exit to escape.
This simulation uses a theatrical fog that mimics smoke to let participants safely experience the difficulties one may face trying to locate an escape exit during a real fire event.
EHS Fire Safety encourages everyone to maintain a safe living environment both on and off campus. Understanding the importance of maintaining safe exits and keeping early detection systems such as smoke detectors functioning properly is critical for everyone's safety.
All University Residence Halls and Campus Apartments have early fire alarm detection systems. These systems are in place to notify occupants of an event that requires them to exit the building. Understanding the value of the early notification helps an occupant to meet the timeline to escape quickly without difficulty.
Off campus housing is required to have working smoke detectors to provide residents the same early notification of an emergency as a building Fire Alarm system. Maintaining this equipment should be a high priority for students.
