A good scientist is also one who is able to communicate and educate others. In order to become an effective educator, I am actively completing a Graduate Teaching Certificate. I also participated in a month long seminar series, Preparing Future Faculty Seminar, covering course assessment and design as well as inclusive teaching practices. Discussing these methods with peers within and outside my field, allowed me to reflect on the learning environment I aspire to cultivate as a future faculty.
I value mentoring students and providing them with the tools necessary to learn in a supportive environment. As a first generation college student with minimal knowledge regarding possible careers in STEM, I found research mentors and preparatory programs pivotal in my career as a scientist. I believe early access to research is essential for skill building but more importantly for exploring your research motivation.
I have served as a graduate student mentor through the University of Michigan's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and continued working with my student through their senior thesis. I have also served as a graduate mentor for a high school student through the University of Michigan's Earth-RISE program.
All smiles for Camelin's best poster award at the UROP Symposium!
Earth-RISE student, Zharia, acidifying Middle Island Sinkhole sediments for the removal of carbonates and organic carbon measurements.
I was recognized at the UROP Symposium and awarded the Outstanding Mentor Award for my commitment to helping train future scientists.
