Substance with low Reynolds numbers are things that we usually think are "sticky" and "thick". We know it would be very hard to mix such substance (for example, mixing different kind of glue) as the different layers of these substance have a lot of frictions to stop them from moving. The goal of our research to find out the optimal container shape and boundary condition for the mixing of the substance. We want to create an app that gives users the freedom to explore the efficiency of mixing under their customized shape and boundary.

Importance of research into viscous fluid dynamics

Understanding the shape effect of confined geometry is crucial in a wide range of applications, for example:

  • targeted drug delivery (transport)

  • enhanced oil recovery (separation)

  • microfluidics for cell sorting and separation
