Required Clinical Experiences (RCEs)

Required Clinical Experience List and Instructions

All students must encounter defined, core, required clinical experiences during each required clerkship that have been approved by the Clinical Trunk Operations Committee. The experiences, setting , and level of responsibility represent core knowledge within each clerkship and must either be seen in a real patient encounter, remediated with a specified alternative assignment, or placement in another clinical setting.

Tracking encounters includes patients seen, setting (inpatient, outpatient, or Emergency Department), conditions/diseases, and procedures observed/performed. This data is an essential component to document sufficient experience before granting of an MD degree. The data collected on patient encounters is used by the Medical School, as well as individual clerkships, to determine curriculum objectives are being met for individual students so necessary adjustments can be made. Collecting patient encounter information is also required for UMMS accreditation by LCME.

Encounters are tracked in Oasis. Experiences vary by clerkship, as will individual expectations regarding what students should be logging and minimum number of encounters that should be logged, so please look for more information at each clerkship orientation. All clinical experiences must be seen or remediated for successful completion of each clerkship. Students will be assigned a grade of Incomplete if all required clinical experiences are not seen or remediated.
