Participating in Transport/Rescue Missions

Due to the potential increased risk of personal injury and related liability issues, students are generally not allowed to participate in, or fly on, any helicopter medical transports, helicopters/fixed wing emergency service (i.e., Survival Flight) missions, or emergency transport/rescue missions. This includes medical students at all levels of training, including those shadowing physicians, providing volunteer services, on required clinical clerkships or rotations (including those doing emergency medicine or intensive care sub-internships), and on any electives.

There are three (3) exceptions to this policy:

    1. A medical student participating in training or service involving helicopter or fixed wing flight that is required by his/her military service obligations outside of any UMHS or UMMS responsibilities.
    2. A medical student volunteering to participate in a UMHS ground organ-procurement run under the following conditions:
      • The volunteer medical student demonstrates understanding of the learning objectives of his/her participation in the organ procurement run.
      • The volunteer medical student has completed all University of Michigan organ procurement travel safety training.
      • Travel is by ground transportation only.
      • The destination hospital is within 75 miles of the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Centers.
      • A University of Michigan attending physician is participating in the organ procurement run.

3. A medical student participating in any emergency transport or emergency rescue missions (i.e. ambulance runs) that is part of and required by his/her/their paid external employment outside of his/her/their UMHS and UMMS student responsibilities.
