This class will cover sources, current and historical, for statistics and survey data on Africa, including international government organizations and government-produced data from national statistical offices.

Health Data Sources for Africa: A Global and Regional Context

Becoming familiar with African regional and country-specific health data is important to understanding social, economic, and political issues on the continent. In this session, participants will focus on sources of public health data related to and reported by international, national, regional and country-level organizations. Discussion of data sources that show impact on African health outcomes such as the Sustainable Development Goals Indicators and the Global Burden of Disease Study will be included. Interactive exercises will give participants an opportunity to familiarize themselves with African health data sources.

An Introduction to the Mapping of Africa

This workshop will provide an introduction and overview of the mapping of Africa, covering the pre-colonial through current national mapping efforts. We’ll explore a myriad of resources on the mapping of Africa including online collections, carto-bibliographies, and other information resources. We will cover the history of post-colonial mapping in Africa, from its developments that include the colonial national surveys through the more modern scientific, topographic & social mapping initiatives. We will use maps and atlases from the U-M Clark Library’s extensive map collection as well as those from the principal repositories of maps, including academic institutions, as examples and jumping-off points as we explore the rich history of the mapping of Africa.

The landscape of research data policies and their impact on researchers

This session will provide an overview of various data-focused policies authored by funders, publishers, and institutions. Specific data policies, such as the new NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy, will be reviewed to help attendees understand of the purpose and goals of these policies. The session will also take a look at the practical impact of these policies on researchers.

Introduction to Digital Scholarship Projects in African Studies

This short workshop will bring together some of the tools and methods introduced in other sessions and ask participants to think through the potential of digital projects in African Studies. We'll share an example of a US-Uganda collaboration, and walk through the planning process of applying for grants, working with library collaborators, and considerations for project teams and leads.

This workshop will provide a high level overview of data visualization tools and best practices, including mapping and geospatial analysis. We will discuss strategies for finding data and selecting appropriate tools and methods for a project. Current availability of African geospatial data will be framed in the context of the cultural information landscape.
