Join us as we honor the centennial of the World War I Armistice and the end of the Great War. Traverse the battle fronts of Europe as we study German aerial views of France and both Allied and German weekly maps of the progress of the war. Maps will also examine the political fallout and new boundaries laid out by the Treaty of Versailles.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and we invite you to join us on October 18th for a cartographic celebration. Featuring maps and texts of Mary Shelley’s world, we will also track the journey of Frankenstein’s notorious monster, look at Victor Frankenstein and Mary Shelley’s own travels, and examine the countryside that inspired this marvelous tale. Step back into the early 19th century and explore the world of Frankenstein and his monster with us!

Come and celebrate the exhibit, Unique Perspectives: Maps from the Tokugawa and Meiji Japan. Step into the world of Tokugawa Japan and join us as we explore the country under the rule of the Shogun and after the Meiji Restoration. Featuring road maps, including the Tokaido Road, and the Edo Kiriezu. Join us as we step back in time to visit 18th and 19th century Japan.

Join us for the last Third Thursday of the 2017-2018 school year as we celebrate maps as art. Maps can be much more than geographic tools, telling us how to get somewhere. Instead, more often than not they become artwork themselves. Come and explore the Clark Library’s collection of artistic maps. We will feature Elaine Wilson’s paintings from Charting the Wolverine, “Europe as a Woman” from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia, and much more.

Join us for our monthly Third Thursday in the Clark Library, where we’ll celebrate the maps of Henry Vignaud and get a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam. View the exhibit Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography.
The University of Michigan acquired the extensive personal library of Vignaud, an American diplomat living in Paris, in 1922. It included thousands of books, atlases, maps, and other publications, with many of the maps extracted from broken atlases originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.

Hali Felt, author of “Soundings: the Story of the Remarkable Woman Who Mapped the Ocean Floor," reads from and discusses the book at 4:00 p.m. Hear about the fascinating life of Michigan alumna and Ypsilanti native, Marie Tharp, whose work led to the acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift. After the presentation, explore samples of Tharp’s work and the exhibit The Student Experience: Flappers, Mappers, and the Fight for Equality on Campus, which features Marie Tharp.

In the words of Roald Dahl, “life is more fun if you play games.” Join us as we roll the dice and highlight the maps of board games and puzzles. Drawing from our diverse collections we will feature maps that were used as the foundation of a variety of games. We will build railroad lines around the world, travel the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon, hunt for Carmen Sandiego, explore the solar system, and build hotels on Boardwalk. If you have your own favorite map game, feel free to bring it along. Remember, when you pass go, collect $200!

Drawing from the Clark Library’s diverse collections we will feature maps of sunken cities, famous naval battles, shipwrecks, buried treasure and old nautical charts.

In conjunction with the Women in War Roundtable, the Clark Library is setting off to explore Southeast Asia. Using archaeological and travel maps, as well as 19th and 20th century maps and atlases, we will visit some of the famous cities and landmarks of Southeast Asia. Traveling from Mandalay, Myanmar to Angkor, Cambodia to Bali, Indonesia, we will also explore the history of the region. Join us at the Clark Library and embark on an adventure.
