“The Art of the Everyday: Objects from Ancient Daily Life” was on view at the Stamelos Gallery Center from April 26 through July 5, 2019. This exhibition featured ancient artifacts loaned to UM-Dearborn by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and ancient glass vessels loaned by the Toledo Museum of Art. In addition, the exhibition included modern studio glass and glass paperweights from the permanent collection of UM-Dearborn that compellingly intersect with aspects of ancient craft and culture. Donald Miller, Lecturer IV in Biological Science at UM-Dearborn and a regional glass expert, loaned a selection of his glassmaking tools. This exhibition was the first one presented in the new Stamelos Gallery Center located on the first floor of Mardigian Library. This exciting new addition to UM-Dearborn's campus was made possible by the immense generosity of the Stamelos family.
This exhibition was the result of two art history courses offered at UM-Dearborn in 2018 - 2019: ARTH 390 "The Art of Everyday Objects in Ancient Greece and Rome," and ARTH 410 "Museum Practice Seminar I." Under the guidance of faculty curator Prof. Diana Y. Ng, students in both of these courses had the opportunity to handle and study ancient artifacts at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, researched and wrote content for the exhibition catalog and website, helped to plan and prepare the exhibition, and produced educational activities for visitors. Please read what the students had to say about their experiences on the "Student Voices" page of this website.
