These advertisements and instructional films perpetuated domestic roles and imposed beauty standards upon white women. The media sources conveyed undertones that emphasized traditional domestic roles by depicting women as the primary homemakers, child caregivers, and dependent on their husbands. Additionally, these sources portrayed women as relying on products to attain unrealistic beauty standards, and always perfectly put together regardless of the circumstances described. Combined with the rising societal pressure for conformity in the 1950s, white women who did not fit these ideals would face strong societal backlash and be deemed unfit in society.
