Teacher-Leaders are essential to the success of the MLK Children & Youth Program. It takes a strong force of teacher-leaders to guide the students through this special day of creativity, dialogue, and entertainment. As a teacher-leader, you will have the amazing opportunity to be the teacher of a class of K-5 students! You will receive training and a lesson plan to guide you throughout the day. Being a teacher-leader is a truly rewarding experience as you form close connections with your students and spread the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Requirements
Register to be a K-5 Teacher-Leader using the link above.
Be at the MLB on the day of the event, January 16, 2023, from 7:30am to 4:00pm; remember, there are no classes held on this day! If you cannot stay for the whole program, you can still be a general volunteer, whose duties range from classroom aide, hallway guides, and registration helpers.
Attend one of the following mandatory training sessions held at the School of Education, U-M Ann Arbor, 610 E University Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. This training session will be required to attend in order to be a K-5 Teacher-Leader.
Monday, January 9, 2023 5:00-6:00pm in the Tribute Room (Room 1322)
Tuesday, January 10, 2023 5:00-6:00pm in the Tribute Room (Room 1322)
If you cannot attend one of the training sessions, please email the MLK program team at hmeares@umich.edu; we can work together to make alternative arrangements.
Be willing to overlook a group of 15-25 students the day of the event. You may be alone, or you may be assisted by a classroom aide. Remember that you will receive training and a lesson plan to guide you throughout the day.
Wear a Michigan shirt or sweatshirt on the day of the event so participants and their parents can easily identify you.
General Volunteers are essential to the success of the MLK Children & Youth Program! As in the past, we expect between 400-600 K-12 students. Ideally, we will need approximately 100 adult volunteers to make the day run smoothly and safely for everyone. Being a general volunteer is a great option if you cannot stay for the entire day as a K-5 Teacher-Leader, you would like to work with students in grades 6-12, or you want to get a feel for the MLK Program in a more relaxed and specialized role. When you register to be a General Volunteer, you can indicate your preference for duties and tasks from the following list:
Morning Tasks
Building & Classroom Preparation: Help set up registration tables in MLB and check over classrooms to make sure all materials are in place for the program.
Registration Help: Use a copy of the most recent registration lists to complete the registration process with students and parents by signing in the students.
Throughout-the-Day Tasks
Classroom-Aide (K-5) or Workshop Facilitator (6-12): Depending on your age preference, you can either help a teacher-leader with their K-5 class or help facilitate workshops for youth grades 6-12. You will also help with distribution of materials and behavior monitoring in classrooms.
Bathroom and Food Runner: Provide general support to walk students to the bathroom and organize food to be distributed to classrooms. Serve food and refreshments to students.
All-Purpose Hall and Auditorium Monitor: Provide hall and auditorium support with safety and crowd maintenance.
Afternoon Tasks
Post-Program Cleanup: Make sure that all materials are gathered from the classrooms and the building is left in good condition once students leave. Look for Lost & Found items.
