Details: In 2021, Universitas21 (U21) launched the virtual Health Research Exchange (HREx) network developed by University of Maryland (UMD) and University of Birmingham (UoB) to promote research and career development for graduate students and early career researchers in Healthcare Management, Health Services, Health Policy and associated fields.
We are excited to announce the University College Dublin (UCD) and University of New South Wales (UNSW) have joined UMD and UoB on this initiative and we will host an information session to bring in the New Year and have a conversation about how HREx can best support members moving forward. Connect with members and hear about upcoming events and activities focused on career development in healthcare research and practice.
Details: This session will describe and participants will have the opportunity to discuss the application of Action Research (AR) perspectives and methods to Community Based and Participatory (CBPR) Research. Action research approaches to CBPR require a focus on “people” rather than “problem” and intend to generate community-based actionable knowledge as the first objective (rather than or solely “academic” knowledge). This requires a reorientation to the research paradigm, the recognition of and appreciation for the “expertise of experience,” a willingness to pursue emergent learning rather than a priori structured learning and changes the position of the community from “informants” to co-researchers and co-learners. Session participants will explore the conceptual basis for and application of AR methodology to CBPR, address some of the constraints of this type of inquiry, and consider its ethical implications including IRB and the issue of Social Justice.
March 2022 Talk: Developing Proposals for Community Based Participatory Research (CPBR) Projects
Details: This session is a continuation of the February 24th talk by Dr. Arthur Hernandez on the “Application of Action Research Perspectives and Methods to Community Based and Participatory Research”.
During this session, Dr. Hernandez will discuss elements of establishing critical relationships and partnerships, including developing a “research agenda”, thoughts on budgets, “harvesting” knowledge, and sharing lessons learned.
May 2022 Workshop: Early career researchers and Covid-19:exploring the pandemic's impact on research practice and researcher wellbeing
Details: Early career researchers and PhD students are delivering projects in an unusually challenging context. The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed how health researchers are undertaking fieldwork, requiring quick changes of approach, sometimes mid-project. The shift to online video and survey-based approaches has been abrupt and has implications for both health researchers and participants, some of whom are also dealing with Covid-related trauma.
During this session, Dr Angela Ellis-Paine, Research Fellow, Health Services Management Centre, UOB shares her experiences. Participants will be engaged in interactive sessions to address the following issues:
1.What has been the experience of health researchers navigating these challenges, and what lessons can be learned for the future?
2. How can early career researchers protect their own mental health and wellbeing while operating in a fast moving and challenging environment?
June 2022 Talk: Experience-based codesign and patient-oriented doctoral research: The family centred cardiac arrest care project
Details: This session describes a program of research led by a doctoral student and undertaken with persons with lived experience of sudden cardiac arrest (survivors and family members of survivors and non-survivors alike) as co-researchers. Together the project team has co-designed novel tools, performed and published knowledge syntheses, performed qualitative document analyses and interviews, developed a conceptual framework and is now planning their last project. During this session, Matthew will:
1) Discuss the ups and downs of co-design and co-research
2) Focus on learnings from the perspective of a doctoral student and early career researcher
